Dog Socialisation is much more than puppy play dates

After many years of dog and puppy training in Perth and around WA, one of the most frequent questions our clients ask us about is ‘Socialisation’ and how important it is for their puppy or dog’s development and well being. Our answer is simple – VERY.

Socialisation is hugely important in puppy behaviour training. The misunderstanding comes with people’s definition of the term ‘socialisation’ with dogs. Meaningful and controlled interaction with other dogs and puppies is just a small part of the bigger picture that is socialisation. To have a well balanced and well socialised dog we need to expose and introduce our dogs in a managed and safe way to so much more.

Never rush your dog or puppy into a new environment or situation. Introduce them slowly, stay calm and in control, provide them with good leadership and direction and always be willing to walk them away if things seem to be getting too much.

We have listed some socialisation ideas below to introduce your dog or puppy to, I’m sure you can all think of other scenarios as well. For us, with our lifestyle, we would include boats, SCUBA gear, pools and dams, sheep, surfboards, footballs, crayfish, mountain bikes and Guinea Pigs.
